* WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. * WHERE...Portions of north central and northeast Illinois, including the following areas, in north central Illinois, Boone, De Kalb, Lee, Ogle and Winnebago. In northeast Illinois, Central Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake IL, McHenry, Northern Cook, Northern Will and Southern Cook. * WHEN...Through Friday morning. * IMPACTS...Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Underpasses may be flooded. Roads and streets may be flooded. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Repeated waves of thunderstorms producing very heavy rainfall are expected across northern Illinois tonight. Given the very moist air mass in place, the most intense thunderstorms will be capable of producing 2 or more inches of rain in an hour. Some portions of the watch area currently receiving very heavy rainfall will likely experience additional waves of storms tonight, thus increasing the threat of flash flooding. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
A Flood Watch for flash flooding means rapid-onset flooding is possible, but not yet certain, based upon the latest forecasts. Flash flooding is a dangerous situation. Persons with interests along area rivers, creeks, and other waterways should monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
Hydrologic Outlook issued July 10 at 2:54PM CDT by NWS Chicago IL
Effective: Thu July 10, 2025, 2:54 PM
Expires: Thu July 10, 2025, 9:00 PM
ESFLOT Waves of showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across portions of northern Illinois and possibly far northwest Indiana tonight. Heavy rainfall rates of up to two inches per hour will be possible with these storms as they shift eastward. Rainfall amounts of this magnitude may cause instances of flash flooding, along with significant rises on area streams and rivers, some of which could reach or exceed flood stage. This outlook means that elevated water levels and potential impacts are possible, but not yet certain, particularly for areas near and north of I-80. Persons with interests along area streams and rivers should closely monitor the latest forecasts. A Flood Watch may be needed if confidence continues to increase in which areas of northern IL have the highest threat of repeated instances of heavy rainfall tonight and on Friday.
