Special Weather Statement issued March 28 at 8:22PM EDT by NWS Wilmington NC

Effective: Sat March 28, 2026, 8:22 PM
Expires: Sun March 29, 2026, 3:00 AM

The combination of dry fuels from the ongoing drought and low relative humidity will continue to produce an increased fire danger across northeast SC and southeast NC Sunday. Despite winds only expected to gust up to 15-17 mph, the strong winds seen on Saturday have already evaporated the moisture was that was on the ground. Burn bans are now in effect across both of the Carolinas until further notice. Relative humidity values are expected to drop near 35% Sunday afternoon, particularly inland.

Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Please be reminded that a statewide burn ban has been issued by both the SC Forestry Commission and the NC Forest Service. These bans are in effect until further notice. Open burning of any kind is illegal.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
