Brush and leaf litter are very dry in all but the northern mountains of North Carolina, where fuel moisture values are higher due to recent rainfall. Relative humidity will fall to around 30 percent in the mountains and below 25 percent in the foothills and Piedmont this afternoon. Wind gusts up to 35 mph can be expected across the mountains, with wind gusts up to 25 mph across the foothills and Piedmont. Given these conditions, outdoor fires will be able to spread quickly once started, increasing the danger of wildfires. A statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice for North Carolina. Open burning of any kind is illegal.

Special Weather Statement issued April 20 at 12:13AM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA
Effective: Mon April 20, 2026, 12:13 AM
Expires: Mon April 20, 2026, 8:00 PM
The combination of low relative humidity values in the 20 to 30 percent range, dry fuels, and gusty winds will continue to dry out fuels. This will result in an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires through this evening. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks, and keep vehicles off of dry leaves and grass. A statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service is currently in place. Open burning of any kind is illegal.
