Beach Hazards Statement issued June 7 at 4:25AM EDT until June 7 at 8:00PM EDT by NWS Newport/Morehead City NC

Effective: Sun June 7, 2026, 4:25 AM
Expires: Sun June 7, 2026, 8:00 PM

* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents and strong longshore currents in the surf zone. * WHERE...The beaches from Cape Hatteras to Cape Lookout, and Onslow County beaches. * WHEN...From 8 AM EDT this morning through this evening. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Strong longshore currents will create dangerous swimming conditions. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The most likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple hours either side of low tide, which will occur around 7:00 AM Sunday.

Life-threatening rip currents. If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Strong longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into rip currents, piers, jetties and other hazardous areas. In many cases, the longshore current is strong enough to prevent swimmers from being able to keep their feet on the bottom making it difficult to return to shore.

Special Weather Statement issued June 7 at 8:57AM EDT by NWS Newport/Morehead City NC

Effective: Sun June 7, 2026, 8:57 AM
Expires: Sun June 7, 2026, 8:00 PM

Abnormally dry fuel conditions further exacerbated by high temperatures reaching well into the 90s inland, low relative humidity (lowest away from the immediate coast), and strengthening southwest winds gusting to 15-20mph in the afternoon will lead to increased fire danger. Fire fuels could easily ignite and spread rapidly in these conditions. Residents and visitors to the area are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks, and keep vehicles off dry leaves and grass. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn. If you do, you are advised to use extreme caution.

Special Weather Statement issued June 7 at 3:31AM EDT by NWS Wakefield VA

Effective: Sun June 7, 2026, 3:31 AM
Expires: Sun June 7, 2026, 8:00 PM

Dry, hot, and breezy conditions are expected today. The ongoing drought has led to abnormally dry dead surface fuels across the region. Min RH values of 25 to 35%, wind gusts to around 20 mph, and afternoon high temperatures in the low to mid 90s ahead of a cold front will lead to increased fire danger from mid morning through early evening today. Residents are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source...including machinery... cigarettes...and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
