Special Weather Statement issued April 21 at 2:26PM EDT by NWS Raleigh NC

Effective: Tue April 21, 2026, 6:26 PM
Expires: Wed April 22, 2026, 8:00 AM

Very dry air will remain across the area, with relative humidity values likely to decrease to minimums of 15 to 30 percent Wednesday. Additionally, westerly winds will strengthen and gust as high as 30 mph. An increased risk of wildfires and fire spread will result. Dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks, and keep vehicles off of dry leaves and grass. A statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service is currently in place. Open burning of any kind is illegal.

Effective: Wed April 22, 2026, 12:28 AM
Expires: Wed April 22, 2026, 10:00 AM

Relative humidity is forecast to fall into the 20 to 30 percent range across western North Carolina Wednesday afternoon. Winds are expected to be somewhat elevated in the afternoon, with gusts between 15 and 25 mph. The low humidity combined with gusty winds and very dry vegetation will result in an elevated threat for the spread of wildfires across the area. A statewide burn ban has been issued by the North Carolina Forest Service. Outdoor burning is prohibited.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
