Special Weather Statement issued March 29 at 3:40AM EDT by NWS Newport/Morehead City NC

Effective: Sun March 29, 2026, 3:40 AM
Expires: Sun March 29, 2026, 8:00 PM

The combination of afternoon relative humidity values 30 to 35% and very dry fine fuels will result in an increased risk for the spread of wildfires Sunday afternoon across interior Eastern North Carolina. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks, and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. A statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service is currently in place. All open burning is prohibited until further notice.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
