Special Weather Statement issued March 28 at 10:25PM EDT by NWS Columbia SC

Effective: Sat March 28, 2026, 10:25 PM
Expires: Sun March 29, 2026, 8:00 PM

Continued dry fuels and low humidity across the region raise concern for increased fire danger. Although winds will not be as strong as the previous day, relative humidity values nearing critical levels combined with dry fuels support a continued elevated fire weather threat across the Midlands and CSRA. Outdoor fires will have the potential to spread quickly, increasing the danger of wildfires. A statewide burn ban remains in effect for South Carolina until further notice.

Special Weather Statement issued March 29 at 4:51AM EDT by NWS Charleston SC

Effective: Sun March 29, 2026, 4:51 AM
Expires: Sun March 29, 2026, 2:30 PM

Northeast winds this morning will transition to the east this afternoon, occasionally gusting to 20 mph, especially closer to the coast. Minimum relative humidity values this afternoon will generally be above 40%, and higher near the beaches. Extremely dry fuels will result in an elevated risk for wildfires.

Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn. If you do, you are advised to use extreme caution.

Special Weather Statement issued March 29 at 2:39AM EDT by NWS Wilmington NC

Effective: Sun March 29, 2026, 2:39 AM
Expires: Sun March 29, 2026, 8:00 PM

Although wind speeds will be much lower today, the combination of dry fuels from the ongoing drought and low to moderate relative humidity levels will continue to produce an increased fire danger across northeast SC and southeast NC as per fire officials.

Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Please be reminded that statewide burn bans have been issued by the SC Forestry Commission and the NC Forest Service until further notice which means most open burning is illegal.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
