Special Weather Statement issued April 22 at 1:47PM EDT by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC

Effective: Wed April 22, 2026, 1:47 PM
Expires: Wed April 22, 2026, 8:00 PM

Relative humidity is forecast to fall into the 20 to 25 percent range across much of western North Carolina this afternoon. Winds are expected to be somewhat elevated in the afternoon, with gusts between 15 and 20 mph. The low humidity combined with gusty winds and very dry vegetation will result in an elevated threat for the rapid spread of wildfires across the area. A statewide burn ban has been issued by the North Carolina Forest Service. Outdoor burning is prohibited.

Special Weather Statement issued April 22 at 10:17AM EDT by NWS Morristown TN

Effective: Wed April 22, 2026, 10:17 AM
Expires: Wed April 22, 2026, 7:00 PM

Relative humidity is forecast to fall into the 20s across the forecast area this afternoon. Breezy winds will also accompany the low afternoon relative humidity. Gusts up to 15 mph are expected for central and southern Tennessee Valley and southwest North Carolina. Gusts will range between 15 and 25 mph for northeast Tennessee into southwest Virginia. The combination of low relative humidity and breezy winds will lead to an elevated fire risk. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn today.

Air Quality Alert issued April 22 at 5:33PM EDT by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC

Non-Weather Emergency Message. Not sent to IPAWS.

Effective: Wed April 22, 2026, 5:33 PM
Expires: Thu April 23, 2026, 6:00 AM

The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) has issued a Code Orange Action Day for fine particulates and ozone for the Upstate region region of South Carolina. The Air Quality Alert for fine particulates is in effect until midnight EDT Thursday night, while the alert for ozone is in effect from 10 AM until 8 PM Thursday. Southerly winds on the west side of high pressure centered just off the Southeast coast will continue to transport smoke from the southern Georgia wildfires into South Carolina. As stable conditions develop tonight, smoke is expected to expand in coverage and become noticeable. Smoke from the wildfires is expected to continue to affect the region on Thursday and may also increase ozone concentrations. An ozone action day means that atmospheric conditions will likely produce unhealthy concentrations of ground level ozone air pollution. South Carolina DES recommends that individuals with respiratory health issues limit time spend outdoors and/or move all activities indoors to avoid the smoke or fine particulates. Keep windows and doors closed. Run an air conditioner if you have one but keep the fresh-air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent outdoor smoke and fine particulates from getting inside. For more information about fine particulates and ozone please visit: https://fire.airnow.gov and http://www.des.sc.gov/ozone.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
