Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 2:03PM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA

Effective: Sun April 12, 2026, 2:03 PM
Expires: Mon April 13, 2026, 1:00 AM

The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures around 7 to 10 percent, relative humidities around 25 to 30 percent, and wind gusts around 20 to 25 mph will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires on Monday. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state forestry or environmental protection website. Effective: Sun April 12, 2026, 2:23 PM
Expires: Mon April 13, 2026, 5:00 AM

The combination of low relative humidity values in the 25 to 30 percent range, dry fuels, and SW winds gusting up to 20-25 mph will result in an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires Monday across much of central and eastern Virginia, including the Richmond Metro area, the Virginia Piedmont, and inland portions of the Virginia Northern Neck. Residents are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly. Virginia residents are reminded that open burning is prohibited before 4 PM EDT each day through April 30th.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
