Special Weather Statement issued April 19 at 9:21AM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA

Effective: Sun April 19, 2026, 9:21 AM
Expires: Sun April 19, 2026, 7:00 PM

Little if any rain occurred last night and this morning across the foothills and piedmont of North Carolina. With humidity dropping to 15 to 25 percent this afternoon, and northwest winds gusting to 20 to 25mph, fuels will dry out quickly. This will result in an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires through early evening. Additionally, Monday will be another very dry day with gusty winds, so expect worsening conditions across all of northwest North Carolina. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly. A statewide burn ban is in effect for North Carolina.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
