Beach Hazards Statement issued May 16 at 12:22PM CDT until May 18 at 7:00AM CDT by NWS Houston/Galveston TX

Effective: Sat May 16, 2026, 12:22 PM
Expires: Sun May 17, 2026, 7:00 AM

* WHAT...High risk of rip currents expected and minor coastal flooding possible. * WHERE...Gulf-facing beaches, including the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula. * WHEN...Now through Monday morning. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Flooding of lots, parks, and roads possible. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Localized minor coastal flooding will be possible during times of high tide mainly near Galveston Bay. Water levels are expected to be around 3.5 to 4.0 ft above MLLW during high tide cycles going into early next week. At 3.7ft, water may begin to reach Highway 87 at Highway 124 on Bolivar Peninsula, and on Beach Drive near Blue Water Highway in Surfside. At 4.0ft, water may start to flood portions of Highway 6 between I-45 and Hitchcock. Water may also start to flood portions of Toddville road, Red Bluff road, West Bayshore road, and Highway 124 near High Island. The lowest streets along Jamaica Beach may flood.

Swim near a lifeguard and away from rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
