Special Weather Statement issued May 4 at 2:19PM EDT by NWS Wakefield VA

Effective: Mon May 4, 2026, 2:19 PM
Expires: Tue May 5, 2026, 4:00 AM

The combination of lower relative humidity values in the 20-30 percent range, dry fuels, and SW winds gusting to 20-25 mph will result in an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires Tuesday across much of central and eastern Virginia. Residents are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly.

Special Weather Statement issued May 4 at 2:07PM EDT by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC

Effective: Mon May 4, 2026, 2:07 PM
Expires: Mon May 4, 2026, 10:15 PM

The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures of 8 to 10 percent, relative humidities around 25 percent, and wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. Special Weather Statement issued May 4 at 8:41AM EDT by NWS Mount Holly NJ

Effective: Mon May 4, 2026, 8:41 AM
Expires: Mon May 4, 2026, 7:00 PM

There is an elevated risk for fire spread today across the eastern shore of Maryland and for all of Delaware. Minimum relative humidity values will drop to around 25 to 30 percent this afternoon. This will be accompanied by temperatures rising generally rising into the 70s and Sorthwest winds around 10 to 15 gusting 20 to 25 mph. These conditions could support the rapid spread of any fires that ignite, which could quickly become difficult to control. Conditions improve during the evening as the wind diminishes and the relative humidity increases. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Be sure to properly extinguish or dispose of any potential ignition sources, including smoking materials such as cigarette butts. Use caution while using any machinery outdoors, such as lawn care equipment, that could cause sparks to come in contact with the dry ground. This forecast considers meteorological, fuel, and land conditions and has been developed in coordination with state fire officials.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
