Special Weather Statement issued March 29 at 1:56AM EDT by NWS Charleston WV

Effective: Sun March 29, 2026, 1:56 AM
Expires: Sun March 29, 2026, 8:00 PM

A combination of dry vegetation, relative humidity lowering to around 15 to 25% and winds gusting to around 15 to 25 mph will result in increased fire danger today. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. West Virginia law prohibits burning in the spring from 7AM to 5PM...March 1st through May 31st.

Special Weather Statement issued March 29 at 2:09AM EDT by NWS Pittsburgh PA

Effective: Sun March 29, 2026, 2:09 AM
Expires: Sun March 29, 2026, 8:00 PM

The risk for wildfire spread is elevated today. Minimum relative humidity values are forecast to drop to around 30%, and southwest wind gusts forecast to reach as high as 20-25 mph. Open burning of any type may be dangerous. Exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks, and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Remember, West Virginia regulations make it illegal to burn from 7AM to 5PM from March 1st to May 31st.

Special Weather Statement issued March 29 at 2:01AM EDT by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC

Effective: Sun March 29, 2026, 2:01 AM
Expires: Sun March 29, 2026, 8:00 PM

The combination of drying fine fuels, relative humidities around 20 to 30 percent, and wind gusts around 20 to 25 mph will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires today. Following modest early morning relative humidity recovery, the conditions most conducive to fire spread are expected from late morning through early evening (roughly 10 AM to 8 PM EDT). Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
