Special Weather Statement issued March 9 at 3:21AM EDT by NWS Albany NY

Effective: Mon March 9, 2026, 3:21 AM
Expires: Mon March 9, 2026, 9:30 AM

Significant snowmelt yesterday, combined with temperatures falling below freezing overnight, has allowed patchy black ice to form on untreated ground surfaces across portions of eastern New York and adjacent western New England. Motorists traveling early this morning should allow extra time to reach their destination and be prepared to encounter patches of black ice. Bridges, overpasses and highway on and off ramps will be particularly vulnerable to patches of black ice. In addition, untreated walkways and parking lots may also become very slippery for pedestrians.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
