Special Weather Statement issued January 17 at 6:56PM EST by NWS Albany NY

Effective: Sat January 17, 2026, 6:56 PM
Expires: Sun January 18, 2026, 1:30 AM

As temperatures continue dropping into the 20s across eastern New York and adjacent western New England, water from previously melted snow may refreeze. especially on untreated ground surfaces. In addition, patchy dense fog may form, especially within portions of the Mohawk and Hudson River valleys. Motorists and pedestrians should use extra caution through this evening, and be prepared to encounter icy ground surfaces and reduced visibilities in patchy dense fog.

Special Weather Statement issued January 17 at 6:43PM EST by NWS Boston/Norton MA

Effective: Sat January 17, 2026, 6:43 PM
Expires: Sun January 18, 2026, 7:00 AM

Temperatures around freezing overnight may lead to patches of black ice due to freezing standing water from today's snow and rain. Motorists and pedestrians should use caution when heading out this evening, as some surfaces may appear wet but could be slick. Conditions will improve Sunday morning as temperatures climb above freezing.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
