Special Weather Statement issued February 28 at 5:03AM EST by NWS Upton NY

Effective: Sat February 28, 2026, 5:03 AM
Expires: Sat February 28, 2026, 9:00 AM

Areas of fog have developed over portions of the region and are expected to expand this morning, lingering into mid-morning. At the same time, temperatures in most spots will be at or below freezing. This combination, along with any refreezing of melted snow, could result in slippery conditions of untreated surfaces due to black ice. Use caution if traveling this morning as black ice can make conditions very slick. Locally reduced visibility will be possible as well. Leave extra room between you and the car in front of you. Additionally, pedestrians should use caution walking on any untreated surfaces.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
