The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the following counties: Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Iron, Price, Sawyer, Washburn. WHAT...The PM2.5 AQI is expected to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) to Unhealthy level. WHERE...All of Wisconsin. WHEN...Until noon Thursday, July 31. Precautionary/Preparedness Actions: Sensitive groups: Consider rescheduling or moving all activities inside. Go inside if you have symptoms. People with asthma: Follow your asthma action plan and keep quick-relief medicine handy. People with heart disease: Symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue may indicate a serious problem. If you have any of these, contact your health care provider. Everyone else: Keep outdoor activities shorter and less intense. Go inside if you have symptoms. Additional Details: Canadian wildfire smoke will impact Wisconsin's surface air quality over the coming days, causing the PM2.5 Air Quality Index (AQI) to range from the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG; Orange) category to the Unhealthy (Red) category. It will be possible for NowCast AQI values to reach the Very Unhealthy (Purple) category. Smoke impacts are already being observed in northern Wisconsin on Tuesday morning, and the smoke is expected to slowly travel south through northern Wisconsin Tuesday. Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, the smoke will continue south, impacting most of the state by noon Wednesday. The smoke is then expected to linger over the state from noon Wednesday until noon Thursday. We may see brief improvements in air quality on Thursday before smoke moves back into northern areas on Friday. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Red or Unhealthy category. * WHERE...North central, northwest, northeast, and east central Minnesota. * WHEN...From 6 AM CDT Tuesday to 11 PM CDT Wednesday. * IMPACTS...Some members of the general public may experience health effects. Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, may experience health effects. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Northwesterly winds will transport heavy surface smoke from wildfires across Manitoba and Saskatchewan into northern Minnesota, beginning Tuesday morning. Smoke will spread south into central Minnesota through the day Tuesday, and may continue into southern Minnesota overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Therefore, the air quality alert may need to be expanded further south into southern Minnesota. High pressure will blanket much of the region from Wednesday through Friday, which will result in light winds and poor dispersion of smoke. Therefore, the alert may need to be extended further in time as well.
Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion. The general public should limit prolonged or heavy exertion. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as outdoor burning, and use of residential wood burning devices. Reduce vehicle trips and vehicle idling as much as possible. Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Red or Unhealthy category. * WHERE...West central, east central, central, south central, southeast, north central, northwest, southwest, and northeast Minnesota. * WHEN...Until 5 PM CDT Saturday. * IMPACTS...Some members of the general public may experience health effects. Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, may experience health effects. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Northerly winds will continue transporting waves of heavy surface smoke from wildfires across Manitoba and Saskatchewan into Minnesota. Smoke will move south across all of Minnesota and linger through Saturday afternoon. The smoke will be reinforced by an area of high pressure that will create light winds and limit the dispersion of smoke. Therefore the air quality alert has been expanded to include all of Minnesota and extended until Saturday afternoon when the air quality is forecasted to improve.
