The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the following counties: Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Chippewa, Douglas, Dunn, Iron, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, St. Croix, Vilas, Washburn. WHAT...The PM2.5 AQI is expected to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) to Unhealthy level. WHERE...Northwest Wisconsin. WHEN...Beginning at 6 AM Thursday morning. Precautionary/Preparedness Actions: Sensitive groups: Consider rescheduling or moving all activities inside. Go inside if you have symptoms. People with asthma: Follow your asthma action plan and keep quick-relief medicine handy. People with heart disease: Symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue may indicate a serious problem. If you have any of these, contact your health care provider. Everyone else: Keep outdoor activities shorter and less intense. Go inside if you have symptoms. Additional Details: Canadian wildfire smoke will move into northwest Wisconsin Thursday morning, likely reaching the Duluth/Superior area between 6 and 9 AM. The smoke will then slowly move southeast throughout the day on Thursday, approximately reaching an Eau Claire-to-Rhinelander line by midnight Thursday night. The Wisconsin DNR will update the advisory area on Thursday afternoon to reflect the newest models and observations. Currently, the smoke is expected to continue moving east and south, impacting much of northern Wisconsin on Friday, with the potential to move travel down Green Bay and Lake Michigan into southern Wisconsin. Southerly winds are expected to begin pushing the smoke back north on Saturday, but lingering smoke impacts could mean an advisory will be necessary for at least some part of Wisconsin over the weekend. * WHAT...The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particles pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Red or Unhealthy category. * WHERE...North central and northeast Minnesota. * WHEN...Until 11 PM CDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Some members of the general public may experience health effects. Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, may experience health effects. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A band of heavy smoke from wildfires in Saskatchewan and Manitoba is moving south across northwest Minnesota on Wednesday. The smoke will remain over the northwest part of the state through the end of Wednesday, but by Thursday morning the smoke will reach southwest MN. Smoke will also move into the northeast and central portions of the state Thursday morning, and by Thursday afternoon smoke will reach east central and south central MN. Some uncertainty remains regarding how far south the ground-level smoke will reach by Friday morning, when winds are expected to become southerly and push the smoke back to the north. Air quality should improve gradually from south to north beginning Friday afternoon, with improvement in fine particle levels below the alert threshold expected by the end of Friday.

Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion. The general public should limit prolonged or heavy exertion. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as outdoor burning, and use of residential wood burning devices. Reduce vehicle trips and vehicle idling as much as possible. Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
