Special Weather Statement issued January 28 at 6:21AM CST by NWS Memphis TN

Effective: Wed January 28, 2026, 6:21 AM
Expires: Thu January 29, 2026, 12:15 AM

...Impacts from recent winter weather and freezing fog are creating hazardous conditions across the entire Mid-South region. HAZARDOUS ROADWAYS AND BLACK ICE: Roads across the region remain covered in snow, sleet, and solid ice. Travel on secondary roads is virtually impossible in many locations. Even where main thoroughfares have been treated, motorists should exercise extreme caution. Any slush or partial melting that occurred during the day will rapidly refreeze as temperatures drop below freezing at night. This will result in the formation of widespread "black ice"-a transparent coating of ice that is nearly invisible to drivers but extremely slippery. PLEASE AVOID ALL NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL. If you must drive, keep a flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. RECOMMENDED SAFETY ACTIONS: - --HEAT SAFETY:-- If your power is out, NEVER use gas grills, charcoal grills, or camping stoves indoors. These produce deadly Carbon Monoxide gas which you cannot smell or see. Generators should be operated outdoors only, at least 20 feet away from windows and doors. - --CONSERVE HEAT:-- Keep doors and windows closed. Close curtains and blinds to trap heat inside. Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors. Close off unused rooms to avoid wasting heat. - --LAYER CLOTHING:-- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing in several layers rather than a single heavy layer. Wear a hat and mittens to prevent body heat loss. - --CHECK YOUR PIPES:-- In homes without heat, open cabinet doors beneath kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow warmer air to circulate around pipes. Allow faucets to drip to prevent freezing. - --LOOK OUT FOR OTHERS:-- Check on elderly neighbors, friends, and family to ensure they are safe and warm, especially if they live alone or have lost power.

Extreme Cold Watch issued January 28 at 11:12AM CST until January 31 at 6:00PM CST by NWS Jackson MS

Effective: Wed January 28, 2026, 11:12 AM
Expires: Wed January 28, 2026, 11:00 PM

* WHAT...Dangerously cold wind chills from as low as -2 degrees north to as low as 5 degrees above in the south are possible. * WHERE...Portions of southeast Arkansas, northeast Louisiana, and central, east central, north central, northeast, northwest, south central, southeast, southwest, and west central Mississippi. * WHEN...From late Friday night through Saturday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Strong gusty winds of 30 to 40 mph will result in even lower wind chills at times.

Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside. To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
