Beach Hazards Statement issued January 19 at 2:21PM PST until January 20 at 1:00PM PST by NWS Medford OR

Effective: Mon January 19, 2026, 2:21 PM
Expires: Tue January 20, 2026, 2:30 AM

* WHAT...Moderate risk of sneaker waves expected. * WHERE...Beaches of Douglas, Coos and Curry Counties. * WHEN...From late Monday evening through early Tuesday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Sneaker waves can run up significantly farther on beaches than normal, including over rocks and jetties. These waves can suddenly knock people off of their feet and sweep them into the ocean. The waves can also move logs or other objects which could crush or trap anyone caught underneath. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...While sneaker waves can occur at any time, the greatest risk is on an incoming tide. Please be aware of the tides if venturing out onto the beaches. The high tide Tuesday on southern Oregon beaches is roughly 11 am to 1 pm PST. * View the hazard area in detail at https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/map/?wfo=mfr

Avoid climbing on rocks and jetties. Stay away from the ocean and remain out of the water to avoid hazardous conditions.

Dense Fog Advisory issued January 19 at 11:48AM PST until January 20 at 12:00PM PST by NWS Medford OR

Effective: Mon January 19, 2026, 11:48 AM
Expires: Tue January 20, 2026, 2:00 AM

* WHAT...For the Air Stagnation Advisory, poor air quality will continue through Wednesday afternoon within the valleys in Douglas County. This is due to an inversion and stagnant air conditions near the surface that will continue to trap pollutants. For the Dense Fog Advisory, visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog this evening into Tuesday afternoon. * WHERE...Within the valleys of Douglas County. * WHEN...For the Air Stagnation Advisory, until 4 PM PST Wednesday. For the Dense Fog Advisory, from 6 PM this evening to noon PST Tuesday. * IMPACTS...Dense fog could lower visibilities and make driving conditions hazardous, especially over higher roadways. Air quality unhealthy for sensitive groups may develop.

Persons with respiratory illness should follow their physicians advice for dealing with high levels of air pollution during periods of stagnant air. If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.

The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
