* WHAT...Dangerously hot conditions. Afternoon temperatures 109 to 113. Extreme Heat Risk. Increase in heat related illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat stroke can lead to death. * WHERE...Southwest corner of Imperial County, Western Imperial County, and Imperial Valley. * WHEN...Until 8 PM PDT Monday. * IMPACTS...Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events.
An Excessive Heat Warning means that a period of very hot temperatures, even by local standards, will occur. Actions should be taken to lessen the impact of the extreme heat. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1. Public cooling shelters are available in some areas. Consult county officials for more details.
Rip Current Statement issued October 5 at 4:52PM AST until October 7 at 6:00AM AST by NWS San Juan PR
Effective: Sat October 5, 2024, 1:52 PM
Expires: Sun October 6, 2024, 3:00 AM
* WHAT...Life-threatening rip currents due to breaking waves around 6 ft, higher at times. * WHERE...East and northern beaches of Puerto Rico, and St. Croix. * WHEN...Through late Sunday night. * IMPACTS...Rip currents that can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water where it becomes difficult to return to safety. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...As pulses of the long-period northeast to east swell continue to reach our regional waters from the distant Hurricane Kirk, the Rip Current Risk Statement may be extended through early next week.
There is a high risk of rip currents. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags and signs. If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain calm, do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.
