...HIT OR MISS SNOW SHOWERS CONTINUE INTO FRIDAY... .Snow showers from the Gulf of Alaska will continue through Friday morning at least. Additional snowfall accumulations of 3 to 7 inches are expected through Friday, with some locally higher amounts possible. A more organized area of showers is currently moving through the northern panhandle as of 3 pm Thursday, bringing heavier snow showers with visibilities down to less then a mile at times. However, accumulations will be limited during the daytime due to warmer temperatures as we are now into the latter half of March. In addition, snowfall accumulations will be widely variable across the area due to the hit or miss nature of the showers. Rates as high as 1 inch per hour and visibilities down to 1/2 mile or less will be possible within any heavier showers that repeatedly move over the same location. A relative lull in the heaviest bands of showers is likely for most areas later on Friday, but more snow will likely sweep into the panhandle for the weekend. * WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches. Visibilities reduced to 1/2 mile or less at times. * WHERE...City and Borough of Yakutat. * WHEN...Until 1 AM AKDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Travel will be very difficult. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Heaviest snow showers are expected through Thursday night. Amounts could be highly variable. Wind gusts to 40 mph this evening.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water with you in case of an emergency. People are urged to prepare their property before the onset of winter weather. For the latest road conditions, where available, call 5 1 1 or visit 511.alaska.gov.

Winter Storm Watch issued March 20 at 4:03AM AKDT until March 21 at 7:00PM AKDT by NWS Juneau AK

Effective: Fri March 20, 2026, 4:03 AM
Expires: Fri March 20, 2026, 1:00 PM

...SNOW SHOWERS ON FRIDAY REPLACED BY ADVANCING SYSTEM SATURDAY... .Confidence is increasing on seeing a more significant round of snow this weekend as cold temperatures aloft remain in place and another round of moisture move in. There remains some uncertainty for snow accumulations at the surface as we are starting to see warmer day time temperatures into the mid to high 30s to around 40 due to increasing daylight and sun angle, however, temperatures aloft are still very favorable for accumulating snow amounts. If the heavier precipitation rates are significant enough to overcome the warmer surface temperatures, snow accumulations will be greater. But if the temperatures are able to overcome the precipitation rates, snowfall will be limited as it melts by the time it reaches the surface. This will need to be monitored for any changes in potential snow accumulation. The orientation of the low and where the showers move into the panhandle will also impact the snow amounts, with how northward and inland the heavier moisture will push and how organized the bands of snow are expected to be when moving through this weekend. * WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches possible. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. * WHERE...Yakutat, Kake, and Port Alexander. * WHEN...From late tonight through Saturday evening. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snowfall accumulation will be variable, and rates may diminish during the daytime hours as warming surface level temperatures slow snow accumulation.

Special Weather Statement issued March 20 at 3:01AM AKDT by NWS Juneau AK

Effective: Fri March 20, 2026, 3:01 AM
Expires: Fri March 20, 2026, 7:15 PM

Snow showers will continue to impact the region through Friday with variable forecast snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches of heavy wet snow, locally higher amounts are possible. Due to the showery nature of the snow, accumulations will be highly variable across the area with expected periods of melting in sunny breaks. A band of heavier snow showers expected to push through the northern and central panhandle by Friday afternoon into the evening, with locally higher accumulations possible. Visibilities will be quickly reduced to 1 mile or less with snowfall rates as high as 1 inch per hour within any heavier snow showers. The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
