Hydrologic Outlook issued March 8 at 4:32PM HST by NWS Honolulu HI
Effective: Sun March 8, 2026, 4:32 PM
Expires: Mon March 9, 2026, 6:45 AM
ESFHFO A large low pressure system developing northwest of the state over the next couple of days will pull a very moist southern air mass northward across the state. This will initiate periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms, along with the likelihood of flooding, especially from early Wednesday onward across the state. While the flooding threat will likely begin over Kauai County and Oahu late Tuesday, the flooding threat will begin to amplify and spread eastward across the state early Wednesday as a strong short-wave trough swings through. With latest guidance showing an even more significant band of moisture moving in Friday into the weekend and lingering uncertainty in general, it is still too early to forecast specific rainfall totals. However, confidence is growing for considerable flooding impacts, especially over leeward areas. Stay weather aware the next several days as this system develops and the details of the impacts become more clear. The next couple of days would be a good time to clear storm drains and culverts of debris, or anything else that can block the flow of water. Keep up to date with the latest forecast information through the Internet (weather.gov/hawaii), local media, social media, or NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts.
Special Weather Statement issued March 8 at 4:04PM HST by NWS Honolulu HI
Effective: Sun March 8, 2026, 4:04 PM
Expires: Mon March 9, 2026, 5:15 AM
A powerful kona storm will begin to impact the state as early as Tuesday for the western end of the state and spread across the state on Wednesday. While flash flooding is a major concern (more details can be found on our Hydrologic Outlook ESFHFO), there is increasing confidence for strong to severe thunderstorms on Wednesday especially for the western half of the state. Damaging winds will likely be the greatest threat with any of the strong thunderstorms, but large hail can't be ruled out either. While details remain uncertain beyond Wednesday, a much stronger wave of thunderstorms and damaging kona winds may be possible Friday into the weekend.
Special Weather Statement issued March 9 at 3:20AM HST by NWS Honolulu HI
Effective: Mon March 9, 2026, 3:20 AM
Expires: Mon March 9, 2026, 4:30 PM
A powerful kona storm will begin impacting the western end of the state as early as Tuesday, then spread across the remainder of the island chain by midweek. While flash flooding remains a major concern (see the Flood Watch and Hydrologic Outlook for additional details), confidence is increasing that strong to severe thunderstorms may develop Wednesday into the weekend. Damaging winds will likely be the primary hazard with these storms, though large hail cannot be ruled out. In addition to the heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorm threat, strong and potentially damaging kona winds are possible late in the week and into the weekend.
Hydrologic Outlook issued March 9 at 3:10AM HST by NWS Honolulu HI
Effective: Mon March 9, 2026, 3:10 AM
Expires: Mon March 9, 2026, 5:15 PM
ESFHFO A large kona low developing northwest of the state over the next couple of days will draw a very moist southerly air mass northward across the islands. This will bring periods of heavy rain And thunderstorms along with an increasing risk of considerable flash flooding. A Flood Watch has been issued for Kauai County and Oahu beginning Tuesday as the surge of deep tropical moisture arrives. As the storm strengthens and spreads eastward, the flooding threat will expand down the island chain and the Flood Watch will likely be extended to include Maui County and the Big Island by midweek. Additional surges of deep moisture are possible Friday into the weekend, which would prolong the flooding threat across the state. While it is still too early to determine specific rainfall totals, confidence is increasing that considerable flooding impacts are possible. Now would be a good time to clear storm drains, culverts, and other drainage areas of debris to help reduce localized flooding.
