Another fast moving and wet system is expected for Tuesday into Tuesday night, bringing more moderate to heavy rain and strong winds. Total rainfall amounts will be around 1 to 3 inches, with gusty winds up to 65 mph possible during the event. The heaviest rainfall rates will occur during the morning and afternoon hours, tapering off during the evening hours. Strongest wind gusts will follow the heaviest rain, occurring during the late afternoon into the evening hours, then tapering off overnight. Additionally, freezing levels will be rising to 4000 to 6000 ft on Tuesday, leading to additional snowmelt. Expect rapid rises on smaller area rivers and streams Tuesday into Tuesday night, but we are not expecting flooding at this time. Winds and rain will continue to diminish through the day Wednesday.

A current lull between systems will come to an end through early Tuesday morning as a strong, quick moving system moves up from the south. 2 rounds of moderate to heavy precipitation are expected through Tuesday, the first will arrive by 6am to 8am with heaviest rainfall rates up to 0.10" per hour lasting into early Tuesday afternoon. A secondary wave of moderate to heavy rainfall is expected by Tuesday evening before rainfall rates diminish into Tuesday night. With this southerly surge of warm air, snow levels will rapidly increase through Tuesday afternoon to around 8000ft, decreasing back down through Wednesday morning to around 2000ft. This rise in snow levels in combination with moderate to heavy rainfall will lead to continued flooding for areas near Ward Lake. * WHAT...Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt continues. * WHERE...Ward Lake, areas near the Ward Lake recreational area. * WHEN...Until 600 PM AKST Tuesday. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 637 AM AKST, Snowmelt is occurring and will combine with rain to cause minor flooding, especially near Ward Lake. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain has fallen in the last 24 hours with additional moderate to heavy rainfall expected to begin Tuesday morning as another system arrives from the south. An additional 1 to 3 inches of rainfall is expected through Wednesday morning. - For Lake Connell Dam: At 4:00pm, Monday January 12th, the stage was 252.00 feet. Flood Stage is 252 feet. Impacts: At 251 feet: Water will begin to approach low lying areas of trails and picnic areas around Ward Lake. At 252 feet: 2 feet of water will be going over the emergency spillway which will produce minor flooding of areas around the Ward Lake recreation area with trails and Last Chance campground being inundated. At 254.0 feet: Moderate flooding will occur around the Ward Lake recreation area with significant flooding of campgrounds and trails. Water will be over the road near the bridge across Ward Creek with possible debris impacting the bridge.

* WHAT...Southeast winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected. * WHERE...City and Borough of Sitka, Petersburg Borough, Western Kupreanof Island and Kuiu Island including Kake, Prince of Wales Island, City and Borough of Wrangell, Ketchikan Gateway Borough, and Annette Island. * WHEN...From noon Tuesday to 6 AM AKST Wednesday. * IMPACTS...High winds will blow around unsecured objects and may damage property and cause power outages. Travel will be difficult. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A strong quick moving system will push through the Gulf of Alaska Tuesday into Wednesday. This low will allow for winds to quickly increase Tuesday afternoon, first over southern portions of the panhandle then moving northward. Currently, the strongest wind gusts are most likely from 3 pm to 9 pm Tuesday. This timing can change as the system moves closer. Confidence has increased in the system bringing very strong wind gusts to 65 mph, but stronger gusts could occur if the low tracks closer to the panhandle.
