Special Weather Statement issued March 27 at 10:01AM CDT by NWS Sioux Falls SD

Effective: Fri March 27, 2026, 10:01 AM
Expires: Fri March 27, 2026, 7:00 PM

Breezy northwest winds gusting 15-20 mph will gradually decrease through the afternoon. South of a line from Huron to Ida Grove relative humidity values are expected to fall to at least 25% in the afternoon. North of that line values will remain above 25% but winds will be stronger for longer. There could be a brief overlap of the lowest humidity and strongest gusts, but confidence was not high enough to issue a fire headline at this time. We will continue to monitor the trends through the afternoon. Please use caution with any sources of ignition.

Special Weather Statement issued March 27 at 12:00PM CDT by NWS Des Moines IA

Effective: Fri March 27, 2026, 12:00 PM

WHAT...Breezy northwest winds at 15-20 mph, gusting to 25-30 mph, dry surface vegetation, and relative humidity values between 25 and 35 percent will lead to elevated fire danger today. WHERE...Portions of northern, and eastern Iowa. WHEN...Through the early evening. IMPACTS...Any fires that ignite will spread rapidly. PREPAREDNESS AND PRECAUTIONARY ACTIONS...Burning is discouraged under these conditions. Also, take care to prevent the start of accidental fires when smoking or operating vehicles around dry vegetation.

Burning is not recommended. The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Red Flag Warning, which is in effect from 10 AM to 9 PM CDT Saturday. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect. * WIND...Southwest winds at 20-25 mph, gusting to 30-40 mph * HUMIDITY...Minimum values around 15 percent * IMPACTS...Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. The times presented here are based upon the solunar theory, which is the idea that the movements of fish and other animals are affected by the location of the sun and moon. The major periods are believed to be the times of the greatest animal activity and occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transits). The minor periods also see increased activity and occur when the moon is rising or setting. The strongest activity occurs during full or new moons, and the weakest during quarter or three quarter moons. This is indicated by the Action Rating.
